In preparation for the Floriade Almere 2022, fifteen dawn redwoods (Metasequoia glyptostroboides) are steadily growing to become the Netherlands’ first living bridge. In the coming years, the trees - which are laid in an extraordinary horizontal position - will hopefully take root and grow thicker, so the bridge can be walked on by the many visitors of the International Horticultural Exhibition in 2022. Ebben Nurseries is monitoring the process to guide the trees where necessary.
The seventh edition of the Floriade will open its doors in the spring of 2022 in Almere, with the theme: Growing Green Cities. It is to become an area with its own ecosystem. A city of the future, that provides answers to the questions we are now facing. The organic bridge is a beautiful example of that. No tenan joints or other structural engineering are used for this bridge; as the trees grow thicker, a solid construction will appear.
For the living bridge, Ebben Nurseries planted the twenty-year-old Metasequoias in 2017. Watch the video >
