Acer campestre 'Queen Elizabeth'

Acer campestre 'Queen Elizabeth'

Queen Elizabeth field maple

Description

Acer campestre ‘Queen Elizabeth’ (‘Queen Elizabeth’ Field Maple) is an American selection of the Studebaker and Lake County Nursery in Ohio. The tree was cultivated some time before 1985; the exact date is unknown. It is a very strong and fast grower with a wide egg-shaped and dense crown. ‘Queen Elizabeth’ has upright branches like the ‘Huibers Elegant’ with a bluish hue.

In May, ‘Queen Elizabeth’ field maples bloom discrete, yellow-green corymbs. Bees love them because of their high nectar and pollen values. That makes the selection perfect for ecological planting. As it blooms, the palmate, lobate leaves bud a glossy green. In the autumn, they turn a deep yellow. The trunk of Acer campestre ‘Queen Elizabeth’ is light grey and forms some slight furrows at an older age.

The elegant ‘Queen Elizabeth’ thrives in central reservations, roadsides, containers, large (roof) gardens and cemeteries. But the selection also does very well in industrial areas, urban planting and along the coast. Acer campestre ‘Queen Elizabeth’ can handle strong (coastal) winds, heat, drought, air pollution, deep shade and salt spray. In the event of sealed pavement, make sure to improve the habitat first. The ‘Queen Elizabeth’ field maple is somewhat sensitive to mildew.
