Albizia julibrissin 'Boubri'

Boubri Persian silk tree, Boubri Mimosa tree

synonym Albizia julibrissin 'Ombrella'

Description

Albizia julibrissin ‘Boubri’ (silk tree Boubri) is a selection of Albizia julibrissin boasting excellent hardiness and dark blooms. The selection was made at Pépinières Bourquin Soules in Tarbes, France, in 1990 and made commercially available by André Briant. Silk tree ‘Boubri’ attains a height of between eight and fifteen metres and forms a characteristic, broadly fan-shaped crown seven to ten metres in diameter with its horizontal branches.

Albizia julibrissin ‘Boubri’ flowers very profusely at an early age. The abundance of fragrant pink-red flowers cover the tree from July to August.  They adorn the tips of the branches and emerge above the foliage in large striking clusters. The flowers have long silky stamens, giving the appearance of fluffy little balls. Although fully hardy, it flowers best in a sheltered sunny position. The tree’s flowers are a valuable source of nectar for bees at a time when there are few flowers out. The flowers are followed by broad flat pods. The bark of the tree is smooth and grey in colour. Juvenile branches are green and change to grey-brown. The foliage of Albizia julibrissin ‘Boubri’ has a ferny appearance and consists of 40 cm-long doubly pinnate leaves, darker than the species.  The tree closes its leaves at night by folding them in tightly.

‘Boubri’ is a lovely cultivar of the species producing beautiful dark blooms that appears to be hardier than the species. Planting this fast-growing tree creates a Mediterranean feel. The transparent crown casts a nice shade but becomes very broad and thus requires sufficient space. Albizia julibrissin ‘Boubri’ grows on any soil type and can tolerate a lot of dry and hot conditions. Poor soils do not pose any problem because of the tree’s ability to fix nitrogen in the soil.
