Gleditsia triacanthos 'Rubylace'

Gleditsia triacanthos 'Rubylace'

Red leaved Honey Locust

Description

Gleditsia triacanthos ‘Rubylace’ (red leaved honey locust) is a selection from Princeton Nurseries, Mount White, Australia and was introduced to the market in 1961. The tree is a beautiful, thornless cultivar, which is loved for its unusual, decorative leaf colour. ‘Rubylace’ is a tree with an irregular and wide growth habit. The cultivar grows to be 8 metres tall, with a width of 4 to 5 metres. The crown is open and has an uneven round shape.

The striking bronze-red leaves of the Gleditsia triacanthos ‘Rubylace’ emerge in mid-April and turn a darker red in the summer. The leaves are oval, crenate and unipinnate or bipinnate. In June, ‘Rubylace’ blossoms with small, discrete yellow-green racemes of flowers, but does not bear fruit. In the autumn, the leaves turn a spectacular shade of red. The bark of the Gleditsia is slightly grooved and is grey in colour.

Wind, drought, road salt and short wet periods are all tolerated well by Gleditsia triacanthos ‘Rubylace’. The tree is very versatile and can be used in streets and avenues, on squares and in parks. But the red leaved honey locust also does well on central reservations, in large and small gardens and at cemeteries. With a high nectar and pollen score of 5, the cultivar is perfectly suited as a plant for bees and butterflies. Gleditsia triacanthos ‘Rubylace’ thrives in dry, damp and wet soils with a neutral to acidic pH value and prefers a position in the sun.
