Gleditsia triacanthos ‘Shademaster’ (‘Shademaster’ honey locust, ‘Shademaster’ sweet locust) is a selection from Princeton Nurseries, New Jersey, Kingston, USA and was introduced to the market in 1956. The thornless cultivar grows upwards with a wide habit and has a pyramidal, open crown. ‘Shademaster’ can reach a height of more than 20 metres.

Gleditsia triacanthos ‘Shademaster’ blossoms in June with discrete but highly fragranced, yellow-green racemes of flowers. The dark-green, oval leaves are unipinnate or bipinnate. In the autumn, the leaves turn a spectacular golden yellow. The cultivar has a main branch that grows irregularly with almost horizontal side branches coming off it. Young twigs are red-brown and they turn an olive-brown colour as they get older. The bark is slightly grooved and is grey in colour. ‘Shademaster’ does not bear fruit.

Wind, drought, air pollution, road salt and short wet periods are all tolerated well by Gleditsia triacanthos ‘Shademaster’. The tree is versatile and can be used in streets, avenues, on squares, at car parks and in parks. But the honey locust ‘Shademaster’ also thrives on central reservations, in large gardens and at cemeteries. With a nectar and pollen score of no less than 5, the selection is a fantastic bee tree. Gleditsia triacanthos ‘Shademaster’ thrives in dry, damp and wet soils, with a neutral to acidic pH value. The species loves light and prefers a sunny position.

Winter hardiness

A plant's winter hardiness is the coldest area in which it is frost-resistant. This is based on the average annual minimum temperature. Winter hardiness zones are thirteen different frost zones in steps of 5.5 degrees Celsius. This format is an international standard for the hardiness of plants. The zones in which the plant is frost-resistant are always included in the description of trees and other vegetation.

Winter hardiness is a genetic characteristic and is not influenced by the location in which the plant is cultivated. This means that a plant that has been cultivated for many years in winter-hardiness zone 6 but has a winter hardiness of 3 is perfectly suited for replanting in a colder zone. It will thrive there thanks to its genetic characteristics.

When choosing planting for a project, the winter hardiness of the plants is extremely important. By choosing species that match the zone in which the project is being created, it is possible to ensure that plants can withstand the minimum temperature in that area.
