Hamamelis x intermedia 'Diane'

Hamamelis x intermedia 'Diane'

Diane witch hazel

Description

Hamamelis x intermedia ‘Diane’ (witch hazel ‘Diane’) is a wonderful cultivar with red blossom. It is a slow growing shrub with a beautiful, open form. After about ten years, this witch hazel will be around two metres tall and it can reach a final height of three metres. The award-winning cultivar originates from 1969 and comes from the Kalmthout Arboretum in Belgium.

Hamamelis x intermedia ‘Diane’ is an eye-catcher in the winter, when the delicate, red flowers open with a mild fragrance. The colour of the flowers varies, depending on the climate and moisture. In some years, the colour is a deep red and in others it is a brown-red or pale red. The blossom will stop during a period of frost but, as soon as the temperature rises, the shrub continues to blossom. In the autumn, this witch hazels turns red and yellow with orange hues.

Hamamelis x intermedia ‘Diane’ prefers to be planted in a sunny location, sheltered from the wind, in an open, moist and acidic soil. Any type of soil is acceptable, provided the soil is rich in nutrients and there is no stagnant water. For the first year after planting, a Hamamelis must absolutely not be allowed to dry out. Place the shrub in a solitary place, possibly with low shrubs or perennials at its foot. The ‘Diane’ witch hazel can be pruned to a very limited extent after the blossom in March. You should mainly prune the rising shoots from the rootstock and the dead wood. If further pruning is necessary, only prune twigs that are the thickness of a pencil.
