Magnolia kobus

Magnolia kobus

Mokryeon, Kobus magnolia, Kobushi magnolia

Description

Magnolia kobus (northern Japanese magnolia) comes from the slopes of Japan and Korea. Here it can grow up to 24 metres tall; in cultivation, it is generally restricted to between ten and twelve metres. The six- to eight-metre-wide crown is semi-open pyramidal and later egg-shaped. Magnolia kobus can be cultivated as a nice single-stem plant but also occurs naturally as a multi-stem.

Of course, Magnolia kobus is at its most spectacular from March to April. Before the foliage appears, the striking hairy flower buds open into a profusion of large, fragrant white flowers. The petals have a pink stripe on the outside and initially the outer petals open fully and the inner petals remain upright. Later all the petals unfold. Unfortunately, the flowers are sensitive to frost and the tree does not flower until mature. Magnolia kobus produces a small number of striking pink fruits with red seeds. The inversely obovate leaf buds bronze, changes from green to dark green in the summer, ending up a lovely mellow yellow in the autumn. The species has a wonderful smooth, light grey bark which in older trees resembles birch bark. The dark brown-red twigs make a nice contrast here.

Magnolia kobus is worthy of a spot where it can reach full maturity: in parks or large gardens where there is room to develop into a substantial tree. This stunning magnolia is also used as a street and avenue tree and although paving is not a problem, this species loves high humidity - which is hard to achieve above paved surfaces. The tree thrives on virtually any type of soil, including soil that is slightly chalky but only if damp and humus-rich. A site in the sun or partial shade is appreciated but it also tolerates quite a degree of shade.
