Magnolia 'Susan'

Magnolia 'Susan'

Description

Magnolia ‘Susan’ (Magnolia ‘Susan’) is one of the eight deVos-Kosar hybrids, better known as the ‘Eight Little Girls’. The eight seedlings were selected from a cross-breed between Magnolia liliiflora and Magnolia stellata by Francis deVos and William Kosar of the National Arboretum in Washington D.C., United States. Magnolia ‘Susan’ – commonly known as the Magnolia Susan tulip tree – becomes a large shrub or small tree with a wide, vase-shaped, semi-open crown that is 3 metres tall and 3 metres wide.

All winter long, the large, very hairy buds of the Magnolia ‘Susan’ herald its gorgeous blossoms. In late April, early May, the selection fantastically blooms large, bell-shaped, pink-violet flowers, with a pleasing fragrance reminiscent of cloves. After blooming, the large, obovate leaves bud green, stay green in summer and turn yellow in autumn. Magnolia ‘Susan’ rarely bears fruit. The few fruits that appear are orange and pink-red and hang from the tree in racemes.

Magnolia ‘Susan’ is a beautiful multi-stem tree for large and small gardens, with a high decorative value in spring. The selection is also good for use in central reservations, planters and containers. Magnolia ‘Susan’ tolerates moderate wind and prefers to grow in light areas. Plant the tree in nutrient-rich soil that is not too heavy but is moist, with an acidic to neutral pH value.
