Malus toringo 'Brouwers Beauty'

Malus toringo 'Brouwers Beauty'

Brouwers Beauty Toringo Crabapple

Description

Malus toringo ‘Brouwers Beauty’ is a selection of Malus toringo from the former Brouwers nursery of Groenekan in the Netherlands. The selection was introduced in 1975 and chosen because of its healthy growth and more upright habit. Malus toringo ‘Brouwers Beauty’ boasts strong growth and an excellent tree shape. Upright with a strong trunk which makes it good for cultivating as an avenue tree. Over time, the crown becomes broader with overhanging branches, producing a graceful form five to six metres in height and the same across.

The leaves of Malus toringo ‘Brouwers Beauty’ are oval to egg-shaped and taper to a short point. Lobed leaves appear on long shoots with 1 to 3 leaf lobes. The leaf is glossy green to matt green and the edge is sharply serrated. In the autumn the foliage changes to a lovely golden yellow. The numerous pink flower buds on long stems are shown off in April. When they start to open at the end of April and early May, small, single, star-shaped flowers form, which fade light pink to white. Although small, the flowers are very impressive thanks to their sheer abundance. The branches are totally covered with white blossom. The striking, small round fruits on a long stem are yellow to orange-yellow and have a prominent yellow-orange fruit stalk. They stay on the tree until the end of October.

On account of its more upright growth habit, Malus toringo ‘Brouwers Beauty’ is suitable for planting in wide streets, road verges and green spaces. It is though necessary to take into account the broad crown shape as it matures. For this reason, a broader street profile is ideal. In parks and gardens however, this selection also makes a fine addition: as a small tree which has something to offer in all seasons.
