Prunus 'Accolade'

Prunus 'Accolade'

Ornamental cherry ´Accolade´, Accolade Cherry, Flowering Cherry 'Accolade'

Description

Prunus ‘Accolade’ (Ornamental cherry ‘Accolade’, Flowering Cherry ‘Accolade’) is among the earliest blossoming ornamental cherries and therefore a real harbinger of spring. It is a crossbred product by Knap Hill Nurseries in England, from 1952. This tree is probably a hybrid between Prunus sargentii and Prunus x subhirtella, with subhirtella contributing to the early blossom. Prunus ‘Accolade’ has a vase-shaped crown with horizontal, parallel branches and therefore grows to be reasonably wide. The tree grows up to 6 to 8 metres tall and 4 to 6 metres wide.

The ornamental cherry ‘Accolade’ blossoms early, from as soon as the beginning of April, with pink, half-filled flowers. The blossom is abundant and lasts for no less than three weeks. After the blossom, the bronze-coloured leaves emerge and in the summer these turn bright green. The autumn colour is a spectacular yellow-orange. The leaves are the shape of an elongated oval with a pointed end. The semi-open crown of the Prunus ‘Accolade’ filters the sunlight, which prevents an overly solid shadow ever being formed. The bark of the tree is light-brown with lenticels.

The family that ornamental cherries belong to - the Rosacea - are susceptible to many diseases. Prunus ‘Accolade’ is an exception to this and is in fact a very healthy tree. Place this ornamental cherry in a sunny position, out of the wind, and make sure it is definitely not exposed to sea winds. The soil should ideally be damp, nutrient-rich and easily rootable. Prunus ‘Accolade’ is a truly beautiful park tree, which can also be used well in gardens and - when grown as a high-stem - it is even suitable as a street tree, in a large tree pit.
