Prunus sargentii 'Rancho'

Prunus sargentii 'Rancho'

Sargent's cherry 'Rancho', North Japanese hill cherry 'Rancho'

Description

Prunus sargentii ‘Rancho’ (North Japanese hill cherry ‘Rancho’, Sargent's cherry ‘Rancho’) is an American selection from 1961, by E.H. Scanlon Nurseries, Olmsted Falls, Ohio, USA. This form was selected as it grows more slowly and is much narrower than the main species and is therefore suited for smaller planting areas. Prunus sargentii ‘Rancho’ has steeply ascending branches and twigs, which results in a columnar to narrow vase-shaped crown. The tree only reaches 3 metres wide and has an ultimate height of 6 to 8 metres.

Although Prunus sargentii ‘Rancho’ has a different growth habit to the main species, the other characteristics are essentially the same. The tree has very abundant blossom with lovely pink flowers, which stand out beautifully against the unfurling bronze-green leaves in April. The trunk has chestnut-brown bark and the flaming red autumn colour is just as impressive on this selection too.

Thanks to the narrow crown, this cultivar is perfectly suited to gardens and avenues. But Prunus sargentii ‘Rancho’ can also be used in narrow streets, as long as the soil in the planting position is improved sufficiently. The suitability for the urban environment is reinforced by good resistance to air pollution and because the tree is chalk-loving, so thrives well in substrates. Just like other ornamental cherries, Prunus sargentii ‘Rancho’ prefers moist, nutrient-rich and permeable soils and the tree comes into its own best in a sunny position, protected from wind and sea winds.
