Pyrus salicifolia 'Pendula'

Pyrus salicifolia 'Pendula'

Pendulous Willow-leaved Pear, Weeping silver Pear

Description

Pyrus salicifolia ‘Pendula’ (Pendulous willow-leaved pear, Weeping silver pear) is a broad weeping form of Pyrus salicifolia and is used more often than the species owing to its decorative character. The weeping form occurs because of the pendulous branches and grey-haired, slender, hanging shoots. Pyrus salicifolia ‘Pendula’ grows to between five and seven metres tall and approximately as wide.

The leaf is its greatest ornamental value. The willow-like foliage is lanceolate, with grey down and emerges grey-white in the spring. It then changes colour to grey-green which gives the tree a Mediterranean look in the summer. In the autumn the willow-leaved pear has light yellow autumn foliage. Coinciding with the new buds, the selection ‘Pendula’ produces cream-white corymbs which are not particularly noticeable against the silver foliage. After flowering pear fruits can develop around three centimetres long but this seldom occurs. Pyrus salicifolia ‘Pendula’ has a silver-grey, peeling bark even in juvenile plants. The thin, white downy twigs are thorny and form an excellent refuge for birds.

The white downy leaf of Pyrus salicifolia ‘Pendula’ is an indicator that the tree does not lose much water through evaporation and can thus tolerate drought. Strong winds and coastal winds are not a problem either and the willow-leaved pear is, therefore, excellent for use on roofs and in containers. The selection will grow on any soil that is not too heavy or wet and prefers a sunny position where possible. Pyrus salicifolia ‘Pendula’ is good as a standard or multi-stem in (large) gardens and park-like settings. However, the tree is also excellent for topiary and equally at home as a roof-trained or block form in smaller gardens.
