Ulmus TRIUMPH

Ulmus TRIUMPH

TRIUMPH™ elm

synonym Ulmus 'Morton Glossy'

Description

Ulmus ‘TRIUMPH’ (TRIUMPH elm, synonym: Ulmus ‘Morton Glossy’) was cross-bred by the Morton Arboretum in Illinois, United States in 1998. The tree was created by crossing Ulmus ‘ACCOLADE’ and Ulmus ‘VANGUARD’, which are also cultivars of the Morton Arboretum. Ulmus ‘TRIUMPH’ grows very upright and has a symmetrical, oval habit, which is similar to the appearance of Ulmus americana. The ‘TRIUMPH’ selection reaches a height between 15 - 18 metres and a width of 10 - 12 metres. As the tree ages, the outermost branches grow into elegant curves. That makes the oval habit more vase-shaped.

In late March, early April, Ulmus ‘TRIUMPH’ blooms discrete, yellow flower racemes. After blooming, it produces small, oval fruits called samaras. The large, oval, beautiful glossy leaves bud red, then turn a deep dark green and then yellow in autumn. The leaves of the TRIUMPH selection bud early, before most other elm trees. But the tree also drops its leaves early on in autumn, around mid-October. The furrowed, grey-brown bark peels off later on.

The ‘TRIUMPH’ cultivar can handle strong (coastal) winds and cold, air pollution and salt spray. It is a real street, avenue and park tree, but the TRIUMPH elm is also great for use as a standard tree in large gardens. Ulmus ‘TRIUMPH’ is an elm disease-resistant selection which can easily be propagated by cuttings and furthermore is also often grafted on Ulmus pumila: an elm disease-resistant species. The tree has few soil requirements, but prefers to grow in richer clay soil. The ‘TRIUMPH’ selection is easy to transplant and grows on very well. For the best growth, position the Ulmus ‘TRIUMPH’ in sun or partial shade.
