“Trees are the instrument to give architectural form to open spaces”
A new, modern office building was constructed in Düsseldorf for the North Rhine-Westphalia Doctor's Pension Fund: the Bonneshof Office Center. Although the new building has striking architecture, the lush greenery, which stretches out on all sides and forms an interesting dialogue with the existing buildings, is particularly eye-catching. A variety of tree species were used to create a canopy, which becomes denser close to the existing buildings and has a more open structure close to the new building. The redevelopment of the outdoor space has resulted in a significant improvement of the green balance, with a focus on sustainability and optimisation of the microclimate.
Know-how to grow
The planting for Bonneshof Office Center was selected in close consultation with Ebben Nurseries, in accordance with the designer's precise and detailed vision. "Trees are the structural element at the highest level and need to be interesting, noticeable and characteristic in their bark, growth habit, autumn colour, leaf structure etc. Flowering perennials and shrubs provide additional colour elements and fragrances at ground level. Evergreen shrubs, grasses and perennials create form." All the species were coordinated with each other and the site’s growth conditions to create a continuous and constantly changing overall image.
