Erasmus University launched the 'Campus in Development' master plan to raise the quality of the university site to a higher level and prepare the campus for the international future. The design was developed and finalised in cooperation between various parties, resulting in the opening of new accommodation for students, a vibrant pavilion and the green, living heart of the campus. In the centre of the campus, all the traffic has now disappeared below ground level and a park-like environment has been created, with a large water feature and beautiful multi-stem trees. Species with particular colour accents were chosen in the selection of the characteristic multi-stems, including Acer ×freemanii ‘Jeffersred’ (syn. ‘Autumn Blaze’), with a fantastic fire-red autumn colour and Prunus serrula, with the red-brown peeling bark so typical of this species.
