Opposite the existing LVR-Klinikum hospital in Essen, a new building was constructed to house a child and adolescent psychiatry clinic. Förder Landscape architects was challenged with designing the outdoor space to connect the two buildings. The solution was found in circle-shaped green islands. The shared entrance to both clinics was central, marked by a four to five-metre-tall multi-stem Prunus ×yedoensis. Other green islands - surrounded by seating walls - complete the design and invite users to relax. The planting continues around the hospitals and in the courtyard with multi-stem amelanchier and ornamental apple trees. At the edge of the outdoor space, welcoming gardens for patients have also been created. These gardens have an additional function as a green buffer between the hospital and the surroundings.
