The internationally renowned Folkwang Museum houses a large collection of paintings, photography and graphic art. After a major renovation by the British architect David Chipperfield, the museum reopened its doors in 2010. Only the building from 1960 was spared, all the others were replaced with a new build, adding 16,000 m² to the museum. The outside space at the museum was designed as a green island on which solitary trees form a kind of outdoor exhibition. Beautiful umbrella-shaped Amelanchier lamarckii multi-stems were placed along the walls of the building. The structure of the trees is highlighted by the clear backdrop of the building in the day and the ground-spot lighting at night.
