A new city district has been created at the old Kleef inland harbour. Modern architecture, old elements of the harbour and historic buildings form the new campus of the Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences here. In the design of this cross-border project, a connection was sought within the available space, consisting of locations on the canal, the historic inland harbour, the promenade and the gardens between the university buildings. The solution included creating green 'garden rooms' between the buildings, where multi-stems were planted. In keeping with the international character of the university, Büro JKL chose trees including the Japanese ornamental cherry Prunus ×yedoensis and the American red maple Acer rubrum 'October Glory'.
