‘A tree garden has been planted from an educational point of view.’
At a 'temporary tree nursery' in the Kop van de Zuidas area of Amsterdam, residents and other visitors can see what plants and trees do for a district. For educational purposes, local children planted a tree garden on a vacant plot of land between the RAI and the A10 motorway. There are places to meet with tree-trunk benches, picnic spots for local residents and natural play facilities for children, including a real climbing tree.
Nursery Ebben supplied climate trees, fruit trees and fruit shrubs for this special tree garden. Over the next few years, these trees will be further cultivated by Combinatie Zuidas Groeit to eventually find their place in the avenue and green structures of the Zuidas. To increase neighbourhood residents' involvement in public green space, a variety of activities are organised for the neighbourhood in the Tree Garden. Primary schools visit the Tree Garden to teach children more about trees in a specially constructed outdoor classroom. Each of these schools gets its own tree, which will move to a spot in the city in a few years' time.
