The Meuse quay in Cuijk has undergone a major transformation, giving both the quay and the surrounding public space a renewed look. A striking element in this redesign is the placement of containers, which not only contribute to the aesthetics, but also to the functionality of the quay. The quay was previously a busy thoroughfare that cut off the water from the village. Passers-by from the ferry stood along the busy thoroughfare which created dangerous situations. The refurbishment gave Cuijk back the Meuse quay it deserves.
Renovation of the Maaskade
The refurbishment of the Maaskade was aimed at strengthening the connection between the historic centre of Cuijk and the river Maas. It also had to become a place for passers-by from the small harbour and a place to enjoy the view. A striking part of the design is the metre-high quay wall in rusty colours, which acts as a robust link between the town and the river. This wall creates space on the quay, allowing residents and visitors to walk along the dyke, along the Meuse and enjoy the view of the Maasheggen landscape.
Within this renewed quay design, the placed containers play a prominent role. They are strategically placed to create shaded areas for users on the otherwise open quay. The chosen material, Corten steel, fits nicely with the industrial look of the new quay. They also provide a natural separation between walkways and the waterfront, increasing safety and comfort for visitors. For instance, the containers protect the waiting traffic of the ferry across the Meuse.
