On 13 March 2018, the Belgian Public Space Information Point, the knowledge centre that advocates for higher quality public space, awarded the annual Public Space Prize to the city of Mechelen. A prize for good commissioning and pleasant, safe and sustainable public spaces, where the human dimension is central.
Mechelen received the prize for the redesign of the central shopping street ‘Mechelen Boulevard Lives!’ The design for the reconfiguration is the work of the Maxwan - Antea Group consortium. Where there was previously a busy traffic route, there is now a pleasant, green shopping and pedestrian boulevard with nice squares and space for greenery, water and cycling facilities. A uniform street profile offers calm and separates the functions in a clear way.
Ebben supplied all the trees for the redesign, including high-stem and multi-stem Magnolia ‘Heaven Scent’, Prunus sargentii ‘Rancho' trees and a large Tilia cordata ‘Rancho’.
