Seventy residential units were realised on a four-hectare site in the German Kempen on the Lower Rhine as part of area development. The area is literally traversed by a green corridor with a walking and cycling route. The town of Kempen chose to plant multi-stemmed Prunus sargentii 'Rancho' along the entire corridor. This species was chosen because of its slender, upright growth habit, beautiful bright pink blooms in spring and spectacular red autumn colouring. The multi-stemmed trees create an avenue planting with a unique appearance.
The green corridor plays a crucial role in promoting biodiversity and ecological balance in the city. Planting Prunus sargentii 'Rancho' creates a natural habitat for various bird species and insects. These trees are not only attractive to the eye because of their beautiful colours throughout the year, but also contribute to improving the air quality and microclimate in the area. The choice of a multi-stemmed tree structure also creates an interesting variation in the streetscape, contributing to the aesthetic and ecological value of the corridor.
The creation of this green corridor is an example of sustainable urban development. Besides the visual and ecological benefits, the corridor also provides recreational opportunities for the residents of the newly realised housing units and the surrounding neighbourhoods. Walking and cycling through this green space not only promotes physical health but also the well-being of the residents. The natural environment provides a calming place in the middle of the urban environment, where people can relax and enjoy nature.
The project in Kempen shows how green integration in urban development can be successful. The municipality has carefully chosen a tree species that suits the local climate conditions while offering a visually attractive and sustainable solution
